Doomsday prophet Harold Camping, who predicted that the End of the World would come on May 21, 2011, has gone missing ever since it became increasingly clear that his prediction is going to fail, even as local churches willingly stepped in to provide counseling and help to Camping's devastated followers.
Camping, the head of the Family Radio, had predicted that the selected number of people on earth, approximately 200 million, would Rapture to heaven on May 21, 2011 while those left behind would witness the destruction of the earth which would come about on October 21, 2011.
He has based his predictions on Bible verses, namely Genesis 7:4 ("Seven days from now I will send rain on the earth") and 2 Peter 3:8 ("With the Lord a day is like a thousand years, and a thousand years are like a day"), and concluded that May 21, 2011 is 7000 years after the Great Flood (4990 B.C.), concluding that it indeed is the Doomsday.
4990 + 2011 - 1 = 7000 (the subtraction of "1' is necessary because year 1 B.C. is followed by 1 A.D., skipping year 0).
Because Camping was certain "without any shadow of a doubt it (Doomsday) is going to happen," many of his followers sold their possessions and quit their jobs.
Adrienne Martinez, a follower of Camping, and her husband have reportedly quit their jobs and spent the last penny in their bank account towards a rented house in Orlando. "We budgeted everything so that, on May 21, we won't have anything left," said Adrienne.
Now that Camping's prediction is proven to be a complete failure, attention has been shifted to his devastated followers. Previously when Doomsday prophecies have failed, some misled followers have turned violent, even leading up to murders and committing suicides.
In order to prevent this, church groups are actively providing counseling and advice for the damaged souls.
On May 21, 2011, around 4 p.m. (local time), a group of rescuers, led by Pastor Jacob Denys of Calvary Bible Church in Milpitas, CA, came in front of Camping's Family Radio headquarter in Oakland, CA, with signs and banners, and offered to provide counseling and spiritual support to the dejected followers of Camping. Camping and his staff were nowhere to be seen. However, a few of Camping's followers who were there, avoided the crowd and refused to offer any comment. One of the followers even tried to assault the IBTimes reporter when approached, saying, "I want to be left alone."
"We are here to reach out to those people who might have bought the lie (of Camping)," said Denys. He, adding that they are not to condemn anyone, said, "What we are hoping is that we would be able to invite people who might have been affected to our church in Milpitas and hold a special service that would embrace them and reach out to them."
The service, Denys said, will be at 10 a.m. on May 22, 2011, the day after the failed Doomsday.
"Churches like ours, he (Camping) says, are of the devil, that the Holy Spirit has left the church and all is left now is a shell. Even though this is what they've been believing and they've been teaching, we love them and we care about them. We don't want them to be hurt. Today is a hard day for them," James Bynum, a deacon of the church, said

The ancient Maya were not only great astronomers or mathematicians, but also had an advanced medical knowledge. Much is known how the Maya, practiced and cured illness, which some of the scattered descendants of this once mighty civilization still practice today. Who were the Mayan "Ah Men?"
The Maya had doctors and therapists like we do today, but the fundamental belief of how illness was caused differs. Mayan's believed illness was equated with angering the Gods, and doctors were both spiritual and natural healers, called "Medicine Men" or "Ah men."
When someone was afflicted with an illness, the "Ah men" would be called. As sickness was believed to be caused by ones soul captured by a supernatural being., the medicine man would first research any past behavior that may of angered the Gods.
But it was a mixture of spiritual healing through ritual cleansing, the taking of traditional herbal based medicines, and therapy that would heal the sick. The "Ah Men" were great herbalists, and medicines were often snorted, swallowed, rubbed on or applied as an ointment.
Once the spiritual cause of the illness was determined, fasting and other rituals were also required to nurse the sick back to health. Therapy would include massages, induced sleep, and sweating. Common practices today to many therapists in our societies.
The "Ah Men," had a special place in Mayan society, and were considered close to the Gods, allowing them to use medicines that could alter their patients consciousness to be looked favorably by the Gods, and spiritually healed. Plants like the peyote, morning glory, certain types of mushrooms and sometimes tobacco were used to induce trances.
Medicines were gathered from the rich forests and the environment around the large Mayan cities. Many of these medicines contain the natural ingredients our own medicines use to cure or prevent illness. Scientists regularly search the rainforests forests that remain - discovering, and testing plants for their medical value.
Curiously as most of the ancient Mayan texts were destroyed after the Spanish conquest of the traditional Mayan territories, medical texts were kept and are now a record of how these medicines were made, and what they cured. Perhaps used by the first European settlers as a cure for malaria, and syphilis. Commonly recorded diseases the settlers caught- recorded in both church records, and the journals of the new European settlers during that era..
The Mayan legacy of curing illnesses, has had positive results in the way illnesses are treated today. And the natural environments around the now abandoned Mayan cities, often grow the plants needed to develop medicines we commonly use today.

New UFO photo taken over the Mayan ruins of Tulum in Mexico on 15th May 2010. The ruins are located on 12-meter (39 ft) cliffs, along the east coast of the Yucat'an Peninsula on the Caribbean Sea in the state of Quintana Roo.
Witness report: Disc shapped craft over the Mayan ruins of Tulum.
My girlfriends parents just recently returned from a trip to Mexico. They visited the Mayan ruins of Tulum and when they returned we were looking through the photos of the trip. In one of the photos we noticed something that made us gasp. You can clearly see a disc shaped craft in the top right corner that was not seen when the photo was taken. The craft is very clear and the photo is excellent quality. The photo has not been altered and was taken strait off of the SD card.
The craft appears to be moving very fast and you can even see the shadow below the disc. This picture will send chills down your back! With the Mayan ruin below, this is one crazy freaking photo. I have showed this to all of my co-workers, friends and family. Even people who do not believe seem to be taken back by this!Author (source: mufon)

What did the Cayce readings say about 2012? Executive Director and CEO of Cayce's A.R.E., Kevin Todeschi, explains.
SPRING EQUINOX 2011: On 3/20 at 4:20 pm Sunday afternoon, spring will dawn. It also marks NOWRUZ, the ancient "Persian" New Year celebrated in Afghanistan and Iran -- and was likely celebrated by the Buddha's extended family in Central Asia, near Bamiyan (in the vicinity of ancient Kapilavastu, greater India). Will it be the penultimate celebration of renewal for the Earth?
One Mayan calendar of many tracks epochs.
The Maya (Mayans, Aztecs, Olmecs, a sequence of many imperial civilizations in ancient Mesoamerica) were overrun by "nagas" (reptilians, feathered dragons, serpents). They were told to await the second coming of Quetzalcoatl, the winged serpent (reptilian ET capable of space flight). The same situation was mirrored on the other side of the planet, in the once magnificent Khmer empire (now Cambodia, with its center at Angkor Wat) that once expanded to include most of Southeast Asia, before it fell and was overgrown by lush jungle.
Aerial view of Angkor Wat, Cambodia, the world's first major metropolis of 1,000,000 inhabitants in its center and expansive, well-irrigated suburbs.
Both had strong Buddhist influences before degenerating into a deal with the reptilian "gods." Genetic manipulation, obsession with blood, DNA, "asparvas" (celestial maidens apparently breeding with humans). The Cambodian connection is clear, although it is a mix of Hindu and Buddhist influence, with a shared cosmology representedby temples carefully built in the shape of intricate mandalas.
The Mesoamerican (now Mexican) connection to Buddhism is harder to see. But it was elegantly revealed in Chinese written records and analyses of art, architecture, and place names in How the Swans Came to the Lake: A Narrative History of Buddhism in America (Rick Fields, Shambhala Publications, 3rd revised edition).Theravadan instructions given at Wat Phra That Chae Haeng, Nan, Thailand (Sekitar)
* The New World Order does not refer to the supremacy of some nations over others. It is about a new focus for the world as a whole: truly understanding that each and every one of us is our brother's/sister's keeper. We are responsible for every single nation and individual less fortunate than ourselves. The Edgar Cayce readings describe that responsibility like this: "Make of thine OWN heart an understanding that thou must answer for thine own brother, for thine own neighbor! And who is thine neighbor? He that lives next door or he that lives on the other side of the world? He, rather, that is in NEED of understanding! He who has faltered; he who has fallen even by the way. HE is thine neighbor, and thou must answer for him!" (Reading #3976-8). From Cayce's perspective, the next Age [consolidating in 2012 but not by any dramatic event] will eventually embody an understanding of this focus.

IN THE FOLLOWING ARTICLE, CARL CALLEMAN ZEROS IN ON THE EGYPTIAN REVOLUTION VIA THE NINTH WAVE OF THE MAYAN CALENDAR. THE PIECE WILL GIVE YOU AN IDEA OF HOW THE COSMIC IMPETUS OF THE NINTH WAVE FITS IN NICELY WITH WHAT'S GOING ON IN THE MIDDLE EAST:
WILL THE TURMOIL IN THE ARAB WORLD COME TO AN END?
For those who have studied my books, and especially "The Mayan Calendar and the Transformation of Consciousness" (Bear and Co, 2004), current events in the Arab world should hardly come as a surprise (If you have not read this book yet, I urge you to do so soon if you want to understand the decisive time we are now entering. No book about the Mayan calendar has proven to be so accurate in its predictions and understanding). One of the theories developed there is that the modern nation state, and also the whole concept of dominance originates in the dualist consciousness of the National Underworld (6th wave) as this is essentially described by the so-called Mayan Long Count. The modern nation state as a social structure, and projection of the human mind, took its beginning in northwestern Europe at the beginning in 1617 of the Seventh day of the National Underworld. The countries in Scandinavia, the Netherlands and to some extent England were close to the line dividing the Western and Eastern hemispheres (the 12th longitude East) and so it was there that for the first time in history national institutions of rule were established which were independent of the particular monarchic dynasty that were ruling these countries. The concept of a nation state has since, throughout this Seventh day of the National Underworld, spread all over the world, mostly through European imperialism, to a point that modern people today tend to take this organizational structure as a given. Global politics, despite its many current international organizations, is still essentially based on relationships between different nation states. In reality, however, the nation state with a ruling government at its center is nothing but a projection of a particular human frame of consciousness timed by the Mayan calendar and related to a particular polarity field of our planet. One of the last regions of the world to embrace the concept of a nation state was the Maghreb (Arab North Africa), where borders were drawn up by European powers only as the sultanate of the Ottoman Empire collapsed in the early 1920's.
One of the predictions that was made in my abovementioned book is that as the polarity of the Seventh day of the current Galactic Underworld (8th wave) was established on November 3, 2010 the system of dominance created by the National Underworld would come to be balanced by a complementary polarity. The result would be that not only left brain (and male) dominance would start to crumble, but so would also Western dominance and all the institutional framework that has been associated with this. The rug would be pulled out under the phenomenon of dominance as such. The only unanswered question has been how long time it would take for the human beings to assimilate the new global field change. In what order would these changes manifest in the current high frequency of change of the Galactic Underworld as we approach the Universal (and Ninth) Underworld with its uaxaclahunkin rhythm?A clear expression of this end to Western dominance on a global scale was evident in the recent visit of the President of China, Hu Jintao to the White House when for the first time this seemed like a meeting of equals. Despite the fact that the US economy is still far bigger (on paper at least) than the Chinese, everyone now knows in what direction the relationship between the "consumer" nation (USA) and "producer" nation (China) is going. In the end the power of one nation to print money will not give the same solid foundation for an economy as the actual manufacturing of goods (Chinese patent applications will become the most numerous in the world in 2011). Today, many people take this changed relationship between the economic powers of the East (especially China) and the West as a given, but it truly deserves to be pointed out that this change was predicted based on the Mayan calendar and its various Underworlds long before it came to public awareness. The point to realize is that the balance between the East and West that is now becoming apparent is part of a cosmic plan of balancing the planet prior to the beginning of the Ninth and highest evolutionary wave of the Mayan calendar.
This balancing and the end to dominance that it implies in the Seventh day of the Galactic Underworld was also expected to generate renewed democracy movements and protests against dictators. What would then be more natural in the current Underworld than if these would start in Tunisia, which is located on the earlier mentioned longitude 12 East line separating East and West, which was the line where national dominance was initially established? (As it turns out my collaborator Barbara Hand Clow was exactly right when she said half a year ago that she expected this line to collapse as the Seventh day of the Galactic Underworld began.) A chain is broken at its weakest link and so it is natural that this also happened in the Maghreb region, which is among those where the national consciousness has been the weakest in the world.
As we know this democracy movement has now spread, notably to Egypt, where regardless of what form it will take the era of rule of Hosni Mubarak has come to an end. Several other Arab nations, such as Lebanon, Algeria, Jordan and Yemen, have also been affected by similar democracy movements. While the Western media have reacted to these events much with a "business as usual in the Middle East"-attitude, speculating about its effects on the geopolitics of the region and the strategic US-Israeli relationship, I think that we, with a background in the Mayan calendar, must instead recognize that we are witnessing something more profound. I think that the desire of the Arabic peoples to set an end to dominance (implying more democratic forms of rule) is authentic and deeply felt and even if there is a possibility of some theocratic regime taking power I believe this could only be temporary and not lasting. If nothing else it would soon become clear that such a regime would not be able to handle the economic problems that these nations, as well as the rest of the world, will be facing. As we know from the elections two years ago the Iranian theocracy is not particularly popular even at home. In the Galactic Underworld the global field no longer favors dominance and as we enter the high frequency of the Ninth wave this will become even more clear.
To provide further context it may here be appropriate to provide a quote from the Quran (Surah 82:17-19) "And what will make you realize what the day of judgement is? Again, what will make you realize what the day of judgment Is? The day on which no soul shall control anything for (another) soul; and the command on that day shall be entirely Allah's". We should here be aware that the Quranic prophecies and their possible interpretations play a very significant role in the everyday life of the entire Muslim world, which is now in turmoil. What the quote above is telling us is that true Islam is not dominance. True lslam is not a theocracy like Iran, True Islam is not suicide bombers or terrorists like Al-Quaida. True Islam is not suppression of women. (Hence, I support Europeans, who resist that such practices are imported to their countries). True Islam is, as the word Islam means, "unconditional surrender to the will of God" whatever form this surrender takes. At least in my view this form may be very different from how official representatives of this religion has actually been practicing it, but as with Christianity and Judaism there is a whole range of interpretations of Islam ranging from Sufi to Scriptural. At the end of time, at Judgment day, this total surrender however seems to imply the end to dominance of one soul over another and I believe it is to this point we are coming now, which is expressed in the "democracy" movement we see in the Muslim world. The logic is that if you are to surrender to the will of Allah you cannot let any other human being (autocrat, theocrat or dictator) control you since this would conflict with eternal law.
Sufi Philippe de Vos points out that Islamic prophecy even implies the end to religion: "I find your explanation of the two different dates and time frames of 269 and 234 days very interesting. When we add the 234 days after the March 9, 2011 date we arrive at October 29. This year the latter date is the beginning of the Muslim pilgrimage the hajj, based on the lunar Muslim calendar and it is well known by Sufi masters that Imam Mahdi (= Kalki in Islamic culture) will arrive during the pilgrimage when the Arafat day (the 9th day of the pilgrimage) is a Friday. This is called the biggest pilgrimage - hajj al akbar - and it happens this year 2011, as Arafat day is then a Friday. This convergence is very interesting and in fact in the Islamic world this has already been announced without knowledge of the Mayan calendar. The particular role of Imam Mahdi is to bring Islam to its original state: The sanatana dharma or "din al qayyim", which is a Quranic word meaning "eternal law". The Sufi masters say, no more religions, no more Sufism and no more divisions. All will be "rabbaniyin" (Lord) as says sheik Nazim Cyprus mufti and leader of naqchabandi Sufi way."
To this remarkable quote Hopi brother Hohongwitutiwa has made the following comment:
"I'tupkom nihqe i'siwata, my brothers and sisters, I am adopted Hopi. My father was a priest of the higher religious order. I continue to share knowledge we were instructed to pass on to all of our brothers and sisters at this time. This information in many ways agrees with what Phillipe de Vos shared. Namely, that following the end of this Purification cycle, our Earth Mother will ascend to the highest position of our sun system as the new Morning Star, where there will no longer be any divisions, where all will live together in peace and harmony with our Creator, as One."
"To reach this exalted life we are called to live much as Phillipe describes as "din al qayyim" (eternal law), which for us is called the Mongko, or Law of Life. To live in this way is to fully appreciate our Mother Earth as a great living being, from whom our lives are given to us, along with everything else we have. The Earth is our Land and our Life, and we live in gratitude to Her as our Creator, the nearest expression of the life and power of the Great Spirit that fills all of creation. We understand that the heart or core of the Earth is representative of that great life and power, which is why most religions still have their priests prostrate themselves face down to the Earth when they are ordained, and perhaps the reason why we bow our heads to the Earth when we pray, although these meanings are largely lost to our modern age."Part of our Mongko relates to the operation of nature that has been progressing us for many ages within our sun system. This knowledge has been preserved by the Hopi, and perhaps remembered in the Mayan calendar cycles, which agree with our own that we are in the midst of a great change. That change for us, as described above, occurs in nature, and involves our Earth Mother's laboring to birth Her core-egg, the true reason for the changes we are seeing that pahana people call Global Warming. When the eggs of each world of our system are born-ejected, each will move-up to an orbit closer to the sun, where new species will be evolved (due to the excitation in our system during this time) adapted to live under the new conditions. For us, this will be the final step up our evolutionary ladder to what we call the Fifth World, and others call ascension, paradise, heaven, and other names. According to our understanding, only those who hold fast to the Earth through all the lures and temptations to come, living with love and selfless service to one another and the Earth (being the best people we can be) will inherit the wonderful Earth our Mother will soon become, when She becomes the brightest jewel in the sky."
A Hopi can thus easily understand a Sufi and even if the language is somewhat different it is obvious that they have a common message including a purification and an ultimate state of oneness. I believe that the understanding of the Mayan calendar and its ninth wave provides the necessary framework of time for us to understand that these different traditions are talking about the same thing and the same process. Without the Mayan calendar and the timing of its Ninth wave we would not necessarily understand that the "din al qayyim" (eternal law) of the Muslims is the same as the Mongko of the Hopi. Without the Mayan calendar, the truths of different traditions, as diverse as the Sufi and the Hopi, could not necessarily be connected and unified. Most importantly, we would not be able to see the role we could play ourselves for the birth of a new world and the window of opportunity that we have to manifest this. Thus, I look at the present "turmoil" in the Arab world not as "business as usual", but as a beginning of a process of total surrendering to the All (Allah if you will) and the end of dominance of one soul over another that will be established through the Ninth wave ending October 28, 2011 (Although the time for this to settle is unknown). Hence, I do not think there will be an end to the current "democracy" movement in the Arab world or elsewhere for some time to come even though there may be setback reactions and ups and downs. (I place "democracy" within quotes because the movement at the current time is not really about some formalized form of governance with certain institutions, which in practice may or may not be democratic. It is about the much more fundamental path towards the end of dominance).
An immediate consequence, especially if the unrest spreads to Mashrek (Arab world east of Suez), is a dramatic rise in oil prices with two consequences. Firstly, a worsening of the economic situation in some already debt-ridden countries in the European Union resulting in significant lay-offs. Protest movements directed more specifically against economic dominance is then likely to continue there and elsewhere, as it becomes evident that the economic problems cannot be solved within the dominating structures.
Secondly, as a long-term effect there will be intensified efforts to shift over to other sources of energy than oil. I thus believe that very likely, especially for economic reasons, the birth of the new world that Phillippe de Vos and Hohongwitutiwa talk about will come to be very painful for many, and especially to those that deny the existence of a cosmic time plan. The high frequency of the Ninth wave will make it very difficulty for people to find something to hold on to as this seems to be designed for us to let go. Nonetheless, it seems that what is now in motion is a process leading towards a birth of a new world in love and oneness where no soul will control another soul. To go there I believe we need to become fully responsible for the world that we are creating and create this world out of a total surrender to the All.

" THE LITERAL MEANING OF THE WORD "MAYA IS ILLUSION, AND THE GODDESS MAYA IS REVERED AS THE GODDESS OF ILLUSION BY BOTH THE BUDDHISTS AND THE HINDUS IN INDIA. SHE CREATED THE ILLUSION OF THE INDIVIDUAL SELF. SHE ALSO WORSHIPPED IN NEPAL, TIBET, AND THE HIMALAYAS AS THE GODDESS WHO GIVES BOTH LIFE AND THE DESIRE FOR LIFE. SHE IS SOMETIMES CALLED THE "MOTHER OF CREATION". MAYA IS ALSO CONNECTED WITH THE SUN AND SUNLIGHT FOR IT IS SAID THAT SHE IS THE ONE WHO LIGHTS UP OUR IDEAS.
Also associated with witchcraft and magic, She is a creative power which is believed to manifest Nature simply from the power of Her will. She is the truth which is said to lie far beyond our veil of existence; She teaches us that all energies are as one. But, as the goddess of illusion and delusion, it is when we are under Her influence we may forget about our true nature....and spend our lives in the pursuit of unworthy objectives.
We can turn to Maya to assist us at those times when we are confused about something or when we reach crossroad in which we do not know which way to turn. And, when you need to make a decision, light a candles, and think about Maya with the many faces She presents to us. Reflect on your life and ponder whether you actually really need to do something at the present time, or can you just wait it out to see if a solution comes to you. Maya helps us to understand how we get ourselves trapped in a world of illusions. When we know that it is the power of Maya that binds us, we become aware of its influence in our lives...and out of this awareness comes a state of caution.
"QUESTION"S TO ASK YOURSELF:
"HOW MAY I KEEP FROM DELUDING MYSELF HERE OR LIVING IN A DREAM WORLD?"
"HOW MAY MY INNER GUIDANCE AND THE PERCEPTIONS OF OTHERS KEEP ME IN TOUCH WITH REALITY?"
"How may I maintain my faith if my illusions are being stripped away and my ideals are being challenged?"

Crystal skulls are another mystery, that we have left the Maya. The crystal skulls were cut in a way like it for ourselves with the latest technology is not traceable. 1927 was found in the jungles of Honduras, a crystalskull in a Mayan temple. One out of a Gus shaped, machined quartz in the form of a skull of 5.3 kg. Experts say it is at this skull and a copy found in Mexico in 1889 to women's heads. There were no signs ofmechanical processing found the rock crystal. So how could the Mayans make their rather modest tools, these crystal skulls at all?
According to calculations by scientists would have to have been cut continuouslyfor about 800 years ago. Did the Maya may contact with aliens. In the Popol Vuh, the sacred book of theMayas, is written. In the distant past were once called "celestial beings" on earth, taught the Mayans and created the first man "you have no mother, no father, no women, she gave birth and they were also not begotten as sons. The Ninth wave of the Mayan calendar showing: (a) closest distance to Honda, (b) Elenin between Earth and Sun, (c) closest distance to Elenin.
Mayan calendar end on October 28, 2011
Elenin and Honda fulfill Mayan, Hopi, and Christian Prophecies
Many have heard of the upcoming entry in our inner solar system of the comet Elenin. There is a range of ideas and speculations about what this entails. Comets have always been seen as harbingers of auspicious or ominous tidings.
Ideas have been suggested that it is in fact a brown dwarf star or even a massive spacecraft, whose entrance is causing earthquakes on the planet. Regardless, in the fall, two comets (Honda and Elenin, to be followed by Levy), will arrive creating a sequence of celestial bodies in the skies.
The comet Elenin, which has received the greatest attention, is estimated to be closest to Earth from October 16 to 20, 2011. This is close to the midpoint of the seventh day of the Ninth wave (or Universal Underworld) in terms of the Mayan calendar.
This is right before the true 13 Ahau culmination date of the Mayan calendar (October 28, 2011). In spite of the specific nature of the comet and its role, it is an End Time phenomenon. The comets will arrive against the background of deepening global political and economic chaos produced because world institutions are inconsistent with the incoming "unity consciousness" of the Ninth wave.
This demands a study of how Elenin is related to various End Time prophecies. In The Mayan Calendar and the Transformation of Consciousness (2004) I wrote:
"At least some minor earth changes may thus result from the high frequency change in consciousness that we are now undergoing. But the reversal of cause and effect to generate a doomsday view where such earth changes are presented as the very purpose of creation is untenable. Any possible physical effects should be seen only as by-products of the consciousness field, and most climatic change will still probably be caused by carbon dioxide emissions rather than some purported insidious divine plan for the destruction of the earth through geophysical changes."

The ancient Mayan people, whose empire extended across much of Central America from late-antiquity to the 1500s, maintained a complex system of calendars -- which, oddly enough, ended with this year, 2012. This anomaly in Mayan timekeeping has caused many today to wonder whether the great calendar-makers foresaw an apocalypse in our era. The truth is more complex. Here are today's top 10 myths about 2012.
1. OK, it's past 12:01 a.m. on Jan. 1, 2012. Why didn't anything happen?
Actually the great endpoint of the Mayan Long Count calendar is winter solstice 2012, which falls on Dec. 21 of this year. Keeping counting.
2. IS THE WORLD REALLY GOING TO END ON WINTER SOLSTICE? YIKES.
Not according to most people who've recently written on the topic. Author John Major Jenkins has tracked some remarkable astronomical phenomena due to occur this year, in particular a "galactic alignment" of the earth, sun and a black hole at the center of the galaxy. While that may sound ominous to people who follow portentous signs, Jenkins finds nothing in Mayan literature to suggest an apocalypse. Ditto for writer Daniel Pinchbeck who, like Jenkins, envisages a shift in consciousness rather than a global meltdown. An earthly sign of what these and other writers have in mind, perhaps, is the worldwide protest/Occupy movement.
3. BUT THE MAYAN CIVILIZATION DID PREDICT THE WORLD'S END, RIGHT?
The truth is: We don't know. Virtually no surviving Mayan carvings or documents make any reference to 2012, beyond the calendar system. Conquistadors and missionaries destroyed vast amounts of Mayan records and scholarship beginning with the Spanish conquest of the Yucatan peninsula in the early 1500s. We are left today with just remnants of Mayan thought. Hence, what these ancient mathematicians and calendar-makers actually believed would happen in 2012 remains a mystery of the antique world.
4. BUT OTHER SIGNS IN THE ENVIRONMENT POINT TO SOMETHING CREEPY HAPPENING, DON'T THEY?
Actually, one legitimate cause for environmental concern that is sometimes tied to 2012 is the problem of solar flares, which could disrupt electrical grids. Author Lawrence Joseph, a 2012 theorist, has written very ably on this question -- though he doesn't necessarily pinpoint the issue to the calendar year 2012 itself.
5. I SHOULD STOCK UP ON WATER AND PROVISIONS JUST IN CASE, RIGHT?
Well, Napoleon put it this way: "Every plan immediately fails upon contact with the enemy." Hence, it's really difficult to say whether generators, freeze-dried food or the massive jug of water that leaked in our kitchen last night (this is true) will make any difference for anyone, anywhere, on Dec. 21, 2012, or any other day. Ethical living, on a personal and global level, takes precedence any day in my book.
6. THE FAMOUS EARLY-20TH CENTURY PSYCHIC EDGAR CAYCE FORETOLD BAD TIDINGS FOR 2012, DIDN'T HE?
No. While this rumor widely circulates on the web, and while Cayce did forecast earth-change prophecies for the late 20th century, he never uttered a word about 2012.
7. BUT THE SOOTHSAYER NOSTRADAMUS WARNED US OVER 2012, RIGHT?
Again, no. While this is another rumor that makes the rounds online and in tabloid weeklies, the Renaissance-age seer never mentioned 2012. Of course, many analysts of Nostradamus would find that debatable. Nearly all of the middle-French quatrains produced by Nostradamus were imbued with ambiguous, shadowy images and language, which led to the profitable development of a cottage industry out of their interpretation and translation. But the best scholars in the field, which include Stephane Gerson (author of a monumental forthcoming biography of the seer) and Richard Smoley, who has recently retranslated the middle-French quatrains, find nothing in the work of Nostradamus that deals specifically with the year 2012 (or with the events 9/11 either, for that matter).
8. DIDN'T A COMPUTER PROGRAM CALLED WEB BOT PREDICT A 2012 APOCALYPSE?
The Web Bot Project is a program that scans the Internet for repeat phrases to search out cultural and business trends. Its findings are broad and widely open to interpretation -- and some do use its data for prognostication. But it hasn't pinpointed anything that plainly speaks to 2012.
9. I'VE HEARD THE EARTH'S MAGNETIC POLES COULD SHIFT IN 2012.
This too makes the rounds online. If the magnetic poles suddenly shift our climate and environment could be thrown asunder, according to theorists. The author John White has written an authoritative book on this very question and finds little evidence for a sudden, contemporary pole shift.
10. OK, SO THIS IS ALL A BUNCH OF HOOEY FROM A BACKWARDS PRIMITIVE CULTURE, RIGHT?
Again, the truth is more complex. The Maya were an extraordinary civilization, possessed of a greatly intricate and multilayered system of calendars, mathematics, astronomy, architecture, geometry and religion. They were a truly great civilization, on par with other ancient cultures, such as the Greeks and Romans. The fact that they abruptly ended their calendar on winter solstice 2012 is a historical mystery. Did they believe this year marked a great transition? An endpoint of some sort? Or were they merely taking a break in their vast system of time-keeping? We really don't know. But anyone who is fascinated with the philosophies of the ancient world has a legitimate interest in wondering what the Maya had in mind.
